f you’ve ever walked into a room full of people and still felt alone, you’re not the only one.
I’ve met CEOs, physicians, entrepreneurs, attorneys, nonprofit leaders, and executives who have built incredible careers.
Many of them quietly admit the same thing.
“I’ve never felt more disconnected.”
For years, I assumed connection was something that happened naturally.
Then I spent a year traveling to all 50 states, sharing meals with strangers.
What I discovered surprised me.
Connection isn’t luck.
It’s a practice.
That journey eventually became the foundation for my book, Table for 51, and later evolved into what I now call the FLIP Method.
It’s a simple four-step approach that helps people create authentic connection in business and in life.
F: Focus on Who, Not You
Most of us walk into conversations wondering how we’re being perceived.
What if we shifted our attention outward instead?
When we become genuinely curious about another person, we stop performing and start connecting.
L: Listen to Identify, Not Reply
Listening may be the most overlooked leadership skill.
We often hear words while planning our response.
Instead, listen for what’s underneath.
What matters to this person?
What excites them?
What challenge are they trying to solve?
People feel valued when they know they’ve truly been heard.
I: Ignite the Soul
One of my favorite questions is simple.
“What do you love most about what you do?”
Watch someone’s face when they answer.
The conversation instantly changes.
When we help people reconnect with what energizes them, we create conversations they’ll remember long after they leave the room.
P: Play Ball, Not Small
Perfection keeps people at a distance.
Authenticity invites them closer.
The strongest leaders aren’t the ones who pretend to have every answer.
They’re the ones willing to be human.
Why This Matters
Technology has made communication easier than ever.
Real connection has become harder.
People don’t need more conversations.
They need better conversations.
Whether you’re leading a team, growing a business, raising a family, or simply hoping to feel less alone, the FLIP Method gives you a practical way to create connection almost immediately.
You don’t have to change your personality.
You don’t need perfect words.
You simply need to become a little more present.
Because the quality of our conversations ultimately determines the quality of our relationships.
And the quality of our relationships shapes the quality of our lives.
